RESEARCH
Collaborative research efforts in
physical medicine and rehabilitation
In January our department held a research
forum to celebrate research achievements,
provide updates on current projects, and
inspire collaboration throughout the
department.
Organized by Vice Chair for Research
Carolynn Patten, the event featured presentations from Patten, Lucas Smith, Baback
Roshanravan, Erik Henricson, Dan Herman,
and Craig McDonald. In attendance were Kim
Barrett, Ph.D., Vice Dean for Research and
Distinguished Professor of Physiology and
Membrane Biology for the UC Davis School
of Medicine and Ted Wun, M.D., Associate
Dean for Clinical and Translational Research.
Research topics presented represents the
vast field of physical medicine and
rehabilitation and range of interests among
faculty members. These include novel FDAapproved precision medicine therapeutics for
neuromuscular disease; interactions between
vision, limb movements and learning with
translation to the rehabilitation of patients with
neurological and behavioral disorders;
markerless motion capture tools for improving
neurorehabilitation; the use of headgear in
reducing concussion occurrence in girls
lacrosse; improving function and regeneration
in instances of skeletal muscle fibrosis; and
exercise interventions for patients with
chronic kidney disease.
Department faculty and collaborators in
departments of Neurobiology, Physiology, and
Behavior, Neurological Surgery, and Internal
Medicine continue to receive NIH grant
funding to support these initiatives for
improving function and quality of life for our
patients. We thank the Office of Research for
continued support of our department’s
research mission.
